The term local wisdom has a profound meaning and has become a familiar vocabulary in our ears lately. Many expressions and behaviors that contain noble values, full of wisdom, appear in the local community as an effort in addressing the problems of life that can certainly be experienced by the community. This reality comes to the surface because there is no global solution that can help provide answers to all the events that occur around their neighborhood. The involvement factor of the predecessors, the ancestors, who passed on the tradition to the next generation, is essential for the preservation of wisdom. In its development, the understanding that arises between local communities is different from the others without removing the substance that is owned by the value of sense, which is to function as solution problems surrounding them. So, in some cases will allow the emergence of diverse knowledge from the local community, even with the same problem object.
The planning and design of the built environment is essentially an integrated use and management of the built environment. Excessive exploration and exploitation of urban land provide little or no urban open space that has ecological functions. In essence, successful urban development in developing countries occurs when the process involves the community. Traditional communities with local knowledge have been able to manage their natural environment wisely. The sustainable management of the environment becomes an important concept in the provision of space, and the use of natural elements and cultural symbol elements through local knowledge. The essence of local wisdom in environmental management for the community is how the environment will provide economic, social and cultural benefits. Thus the use of local knowledge in green city planning must pay attention to the context of the use of experience, local technology in the form of Local Wisdom maintaining.
Local wisdom as A Guide to City Spatial Planning and Design
Good City Spatial Planning and Design are the product of planning and design that implemented without causing socio-cultural gaps. Spatial planning and design require a comprehensive approach that expected to accommodate the socio-cultural aspects of society. A study on Local Wisdom is an effort to find local knowledge that is important to understanding the socio-cultural values of the nation. Understanding of socio-cultural values of the community can occur through a participatory approach. Participatory approaches in the study carried out to explore the local wisdom and local knowledge of the product concept of spatial planning of the past that has proven throughout the ages. Study of concepts, theory, and best practices on the local knowledge of the past results of the design (traditional urban spatial structure) through a review of the design and method of urban design is an effort to sustainable urban development. Thus the policy of urban development in planning policy must be able to accommodate local knowledge to create the character of a city.
